BMW Displays i8 Spyder
And this is what all we need to know in the automotive industry, the BMW i8 Spyder . BMW’s new “i” sub-brand is now rocking with the spyder version of the i8 Coupe. Seeing its closeness to the Coupe model, experts believe that this model also may go production lines in coming years. The i8 Spyder is scheduled to make debut at the Auto China Show 2012 in Beijing. The Spyder configuration is based on the same platform and plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Coupe, but is a bit shorter in length and wheelbase.
The BMW i8 Spyder gets a redesigned rear end with transparent engine cover. BMW is yet to tell words on the roof. Like the series models, Spyder is also built with carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic structure.
For the power, the i8 plug-in hybrid powertrain is an absolute combination of two power units, the 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline with 220HP and 221 lb-ft. of torque and an electric motor producing 129HP. The gasoline unit powers rear wheels while the electric motor powers front wheels. Vehicle can be powered by both the units or separately. The i8 Spyder is able to do a 0-62mph in 5.0 second, less than Coupe’s 4.6 seconds.
